$GOOG Exec Admits Buying Motorola Essentially for It's Valuable Patents RE: Android
Google (GOOG) is really only into Motorola for its patents. In any interview with the New York Times, Google director of Android business development John Lagerling was asked why his company hadn’t yet teamed with Motorola to produce a Nexus-branded device, despite the fact that Google now fully owns Motorola. Lagerling responded by saying that the Android team and Motorola team were separate and that Motorola was just another partner like Samsung (005930) or LG (06657011). When pressed further and asked about how Google is “taking advantage” of the Motorola acquisition, Lagerling said that “it’s mostly about the patents, the way you can sort of disarm this huge attack against Android.”
