Goldman Sachs: iPad 2 an “IMPORTANT UPGRADE”

Goldman Sachs: iPad 2 an “IMPORTANT UPGRADE”

"Analyst Bill Shope of Goldman Sachs expects Apple to update the iPad at the media event announced for Wednesday, March 2nd, and he believes it will represent an “important upgrade” for the platform. In a research note covered byTheStreet.com, Mr. Shope also told investors that the upgraded tablet would also help stave off competing tablets that are expected throughout the first half of the year.
“Overall, we expect the device to provide an early line of defense against the wave of tablet competitors arriving in the coming months, and we expect the launch to represent a positive catalyst for Apple’s stock,” Mr. Shope wrote. “While the details on the upcoming iPad 2’s specifications are scarce, we expect the device to represent an important upgrade.”
Despite the “scarce” details, he said that he expects the device to be “far thinner,” and to have a faster processor and better graphics capabilities. He said it won’t support LTE, but backed up reports that the device would support both GSM and CDMA networks.""

Apple POTENTIAL CEO (Jony Ive) told: 'Your career, or your kids'

Rumor: Apple to Jony Ive: 'Your career, or your kids'

"As iPad 2.0 looms and Java-free Lion prowls, this morning's gloomy Apple[AAPL] story revolves around claims Brit-born senior vice president of Industrial Design, Jony Ive, plans to quit the firm as he and the board hit an impasse over his wish to give his children a proper UK education.
As reported by the Sunday Times, (paywall link) and also the Daily Mail, Ive and his wife "want to educate their twin sons in England." Apple's not happy about this and has told him that he can't return to the UK and stay with Apple.
The timing is pretty messy.
Ive has informed nearly all Apple's major hardware product designs since joining the company in 1996. With Jobs out of the loop on extended medical leave these additional reports will inevitably drive investor concern."

New Trojan TARGETS the Mac, while Apple FINALLY reaches out to security pros

New Trojan targets the Mac, while Apple finally reaches out to security pros

"Some security researchers have long complained that Apple won't take security seriously because doing so conflict with the company's marketing message that Mac buyers need not worry about being attacked. The discovery of a beta of a Mac-attacking Trojan once again shows Mac invulnerability to be a myth. And in an unrelated move, Apple has reached out to security researchers, showing that it may finally take security seriously.
The security company Sophos says that it's found the beta of a backdoor Trojan targeting the Mac that's "a variant of "a well-known Remote Access Trojan (RAT) for Windows known as darkComet."

IPAD2 Rumor Roundup!

IPAD2 Rumor Roundup!

"With Apple's iPad 2 event less than 48 hours away, the rumor mill is spinning faster than ever. What's the wisdom of the Web predicting? A thinner, lighter iPad with at least one camera and beefier hardware.
The consensus is that iPad 2 will be more of an evolution than a revolution from the original iPad, of which Apple has sold more than 15 million.
As usual, Apple has been disciplined about not releasing any information before their big press event. That has led the Web to spend much of its time digging, speculating and daydreaming about what may be coming. Some of the rumors make more sense than others, but as always, you should take them with a pinch of salt."

Ex-Apple manager charged in kickback scheme pleads guilty, forfeits $2.3M

" Paul Devine, former iPhone global supply manager for Apple, pleaded guilty on Monday to charges that he accepted kickbacks from Asian suppliers, according to Reuters. The plea, discovered in a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco, Calif., is a change from last August, when Devine pleaded not guilty to charges that he accepted more than a million dollars in bribes and payments.

Devine, who worked for Apple starting in 2005, was accused of providing information and assistance to six overseas suppliers. He was indicted last year on 23 counts."

When Will Apple Cave And Accept Flash? Maybe When It Doesn’t Suck

When Will Apple Cave And Accept Flash? Maybe When It Doesn’t Suck

"I read an interesting article this morning that suggested Apple would change its mind and put Adobe’s Flash technology on its iOS devices within a year. I don’t think that’s going to happen.
In an open letter to users, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave several reasons why he didn’t want Flash on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. They are: Flash isn’t open; the full web; reliability, security and performance; battery life; and touch."

Apple Replacement for Steve Jobs: We Don't Want To Be For "Just The Rich"

"Apple COO Tim Cook strongly suggested we will see a cheaper iPhone in the near future in an interview with Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi.
Cook says Apple is doing "clever things" to attack the prepaid market, because he doesn't want Apple to be "for everyone," not "just for the rich." Cook also recognizes "price is big factor in the prepaid market," but Apple is not "ceding any market."
He also says Apple has been driving into China which is "a classic prepaid market."

Comcast-NBC = Great News for iTunes Cord Cutters?

Comcast-NBC = Great News for iTunes Cord Cutters?

"Cord cutters who’ve left cable and satellite behind will be happy to learn that Comcast hasagreed to continue licensing NBC content to digital distribution rivals like iTunes in order to convince the government to approve its acquisition of the TV network. That’s not the only good news, though, as the terms of the deal could see NBC content finally come to Apple TV as $0.99 rentals"

iPad genius from Essex is tipped to be new boss of Apple - WHO IS HE?

iPad genius from Essex is tipped to be new boss of Apple - WHO IS HE?

"A DESIGNER from Essex who helped create the iPod, iPhone and iPad is tipped to take over US computer giant Apple.
Jonathan “Jony” Ive is being lined up to replace the firm’s co-founder Steve Jobs who has taken medical leave after a liver transplant.
The 44-year-old, from Chingford, is already in line for an £18million payout in a “golden handcuffs” deal agreed three years ago – taking his personal wealth to £80million.
Ive, who gave the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad their minimalist looks, owns a Bentley and an Aston Martin and has houses in Hawaii, San Francisco and England.
And he counts Stephen Fry, Bono and fashion designer Paul Smith among his celebrity friends.
Apple’s board want him to take over from Jobs but sources say the creative genius wants to spend more time at his £2.5million Georgian manor house in Somerset."

Apple iPad 2 Features: The Likely, the Unlikely and the Impossible

Apple iPad 2 Features: The Likely, the Unlikely and the Impossible

"Apple will likely unveil the iPad 2 next week. Possible new features include dual cameras, slimmer body and a more powerful processor. But Adobe Flash support? Unlikely.
Next week, Apple is widely expected to introduce the next version of its popular iPad.
Apple’s media invitation to the San Francisco event features an iOS calendar icon for March 2, its upper-right corner peeled away to reveal the edge of an iPad. That not only removes any questions over the focus of Apple’s announcement, but also poses a challenge to Motorola, whose Android-based Xoom tablet just hit store shelves."

Consumer Reports doesn't recommend Verizon iPhone 4

Consumer Reports doesn't recommend Verizon iPhone 4

"After declining to recommend the popular smartphone after its original release last June, the influential product review publication is now giving a thumbs-down to the new model for Verizon's network.
According to Consumer Reports, the phone has the potential for problems with dropped calls and poor reception, just like its predecessor.
"The Verizon iPhone 4 closely resembles the original AT&T iPhone 4 in many positive respects, including offering great multimedia functionality, a sharp screen, and the best MP3 player we've seen on a phone," Paul Reynolds of Consumer Reports wrote Friday onthe group's Electronics Blog."

Apple Cofounder Cries At Play About Apple Horrendous Working Conditions in China

Steve Wozniak, Apple’s co-founder, was moved to tears by a play about the working conditions of Apple’s factories in China. Woz went to see “The Agony and the Ecstacy of Steve Jobs” by Mike Daisey on Tuesday night at the Berkeley Repertory Theater. The one -man show, which describes the working conditions in the massive factories that make gadgets for Apple, Hewlett-Packard and others, made Wozniak cry.

Apple’s iPad Still Has No Competition - when will IT?

Apple’s iPad Still Has No Competition - when will IT? - It’s been almost a year since Apple released the iPad and we’re less than a week away from the unveiling of the iPad 2, and still there’s no competition. There are a few very good reasons for Apple’s success and why its competitors are finding it difficult to gain any traction against the king of digital devices. There’s the infrastructure, the combination of hardware and software, and the fact that its competitors are content to settle for second best. Let’s look at these separately. Apple didn’t invent the tablet, but it did popularize the concept and how it fits into our lifestyle. Clearly the evidence of this is that every tablet announced or released since the iPad looks just like it.

Consumer Reports claims Apple's Verizon iPhone 4 suffers same antenna issue

"On the company's electronics blog on Friday, Consumer Reports said it discovered a manner in which the new iPhone 4 can be held that will cause it to drop calls in weak signal conditions. The attenuation issue was reportedly discovered by the company's engineers in lab tests.

"The problem is similar to the one we confirmed in July with the AT&T version of Apple's newest smart phone," the post reads. "It can occur when you hold either version of the phone in a specific but quite natural way in which a gap in the phone's external casing is covered.

"The phone performs superbly in most other respects, and using the iPHone 4 with a case can alleviate the problem>"

Apple Supplier Pays Poisoned Workers - but does Apple Change It's Oversight??

Apple Supplier Pays Poisoned Workers

"The Taiwan-based company, which owns factories in each China's Suzhou industrial park, said it has set aside a combined 10 million yuan, or about $1.5 million, to compensate workers who were affected by hexyl hydride, also known as n-hexane, a fast-drying agent used to clean displays.
The factory workers became ill in 2009 after being exposed to the substance, which caused pain and numbness, prompting employees to write to Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs for help in paying their medical bills."

Apple’s Cloud Music Plans Don’t Involve Unlimited Subscription

"Apple has plans for putting iTunes in the cloud, but a subscription service that provides users unlimited access to Apple’s entire content library is not among them, according to a new report by the Financial Times. Instead, the company seems interested only in using remote storage to make sure users can have access to their own personal libraries on whatever device they may be using."

10 Unusual Things I Didn’t Know About Steve Jobs

10 Unusual Things I Didn’t Know About Steve Jobs

"I was standing right next to Steve Jobs in 1989 and it was the closest thing I ever felt to being gay. The guy was incredibly wealthy, good looking enough to get any girl, a nerd super-rockstar who had just convinced my school to buy a bunch of NeXT machines (which, btw, were in fact the best machines to program on at the time) and I just wanted to be him. I wanted to be him ever since I had the Apple II+ as a kid. Ever since I shoplifted Ultima II, Castle Wolfenstein, and half a dozen other games that my friends and I would then rip from each other and pretend to be sick so we could stay home and play all day.
I don’t care about Apple stock. (Well, I do think it will be the first trillion dollar company). Or about his business successes. That’s boring. The only thing that matters to me is how Steve Jobs became the greatest artist that ever lived. You only get to be an artist like that by turning everything in your life upside down, by making horrible, ugly, mistakes, by doing things so differently that people will never be able to figure you out. By failing, cheating, lying, having everyone hate you, and coming out the other side with a little bit more wisdom than the rest."

Piper: Wall Street underestimates growth potential of Apple's iPhone in China

"Sustained growth of the iPhone, especially in China, will help Apple to maintain a 25-30 percent growth rate in earnings through 2015, says investment firm Piper Jaffray.Analyst Gene Munster issued a note to investors on Wednesday expressing the belief that Wall Street currently underestimates Apple's mobile growth potential. Piper Jaffray's 12 month price target for Apple stock is $483. According to Munster, if the iPhone can continue to grow in-line with the smartphone market at a rate of roughly 35 percent in calendar 2011, Apple will sell over 200 million iPhones in 2015."

PayPal exec says publishers won't embrace Apple's iPad 2, App Store subscriptions

"But Sam Shrauger, PayPal's vice president of global product and experience, isn't so sure the next iPad will be a hit with content publishers, particularly due to the 30% cut Apple is taking in its new App Store subscription service. "Somehow I doubt it," Shrauger wrote in a company blog post on Wednesday. "We have heard from a number of publishers since last week who are outraged at Apple's 30 percent cut." If Apple's subscription service doesn't pan out, that might not be so bad for its competitors -- which among them is PayPal, owned by EBay. PayPal offers a service of its own for publishers and takes a 5% cut of revenue."

"RBC Capital Markets and ChangeWave recently conducted a survey of 3,091 respondents between Jan. 31 and Feb. 9, asking them about a hypothetical scenario in which Jobs might depart Apple, the company he co-founded. Of those surveyed, 93 percent said they would likely continue buying Apple's products or would not actively change their purchasing decisions if Jobs were not at the helm.

The latest results are a change from June 2008, when a previous survey found that 18 percent of respondents said they would be less likely to buy Apple products if Steve Jobs were not with the company."

Apple Products Appeared in 30% of Movies in 2010

Apple Products Appeared in 30% of Movies in 2010

" Placement of Apple's Macs, iPhones and iPods and other products in films resulted in the company being cited for the "2010 Award for Overall Product Placement" by Brandcameo.

Arranging to put its products in conspicuous sight in films is nothing new for the company, which has maintained the top spot among brands over the past decade, with cameos in 112 of the top 334 most popular movies in America since 2001.

Macs have conspicuously shown up in films ranging from StarTrek IV, where character Montgomery Scott goes back in time to 1986 and uses a Macintosh Plus to show engineers how to build transparent aluminum, to Independence Day in 1996, where a PowerBook is used to upload a lethal virus into the system of attacking aliens."

Apple Workers Being Bound To Secrecy - for what?

" Apple has asked its retail employees to sign non-disclosure agreements ahead of an all-hands meeting likely to be held later this week, and potentially foreshadowing a forthcoming media event, AppleInsider has been told.

People familiar with the company's retail plans revealed that Apple employees on Monday were asked to sign non-disclosure forms. Those who did not sign are said to be excluded from the next employee meeting, expected to be held in the next week.

Those privy to Apple's brick-and-mortar businesses indicated the meeting was originally scheduled for last week. But the meeting was apparently pushed back for one week, for reasons unknown."

Apple new subscription rules now upsetting developers, too

Apple Upsetting Developers Now?

"While some publishers have bemoaned Apple's new sysyem, certain developers are starting to feel the pinch as well. Arc90, developer of the Readability Web service, has taken Apple to task for rejecting Readability's native iOS client on the grounds that it doesn't abide by the new subscription rules. Keyone Productions, maker of TinyGrab, has also decided to not even finish developing its iOS app, claiming Apple's rules are so confounding that it is impossible for the company to make an "acceptable" app."

Low stock levels suggest iPad 2 is imminent

Low stock levels suggest iPad 2 is imminent

" 9to5mac has been doing some homework and has come to the conclusion that the iPad 2 isn’t far off. Earlier today we got a look at a possible iPad 2 case but, let’s face it, case leaks happen all the time. This article notes a few prominent retailers that have either discounted the iPad or sold out of it altogether, which leads the author to believe that Apple hasn’t been able to replenish supplies. And why would Apple not be able to do that? It stands to reason that it’s because the second iPad is just around the bend. "

Steve Jobs' App Store police have rejected the iOS version of Readability – an online service that allows you to read online stories stripped of ads, Flash, and other distractions – saying the app's developers provided no way for Apple to take its cut of subscription revenue.

"Cult of Mac says it’s independently confirmed reports that Apple will open its biggest ever location at the historic train station. The announcement is expected to be made internally in the next month or so.

Though the exact location within Grand Central is not known, it is expected to be called ‘Apple Store, Grand Central,’ and it will be situated right in the terminal, as opposed to one of the traditional retail spots. Cult of Mac’s sources said Apple may even be knocking a wall."

New Apple Patents? improved way of juicing up

New Apple Patents? improved way of juicing up

"Some might think a ten-hour Macbook battery mighty fine, but we're happy to say that Cupertino's not quite satisfied. AppleInsider spotted a pair of Apple patent applications detailing a improved way of juicing up those lithium-polymer cells, which should greatly increase the number of recharge cycles they can endure -- or, optionally, allow Apple to use denser batteries that last longer on a charge. We'll break it down for you: the graph in the upper-left shows how Li-ion batteries currently charge, first very rapidly (constant current, increasing voltage) and then more slowly (constant voltage, decreasing current) to top the cells off. China's rotten Apple core

" HUA HIN, Thailand - Following increasing scrutiny, the fastidious but lucrative Apple Inc has released a report revealing child labor, poisonings, overworking and suicides at a number of its Chinese suppliers. According to its annual Supplier Responsibility 2011 Progress Report, Apple found 91 children working in 10 factories last year, nine times more than the previous year.

The company also acknowledged that 137 workers were poisoned by n-hexane, a toxic chemical in cleaning agents, used apparently without Apple's go-ahead at a Chinese plant manufacturing its products, and that under a third of the facilities it audited were complying with its code on working hours. A maximum 60-hour week with one day off had been set; only 32% of places met that requirement and only 57% were compliant with a company code on safety in the workplace."

Regulators Eye New Apple Subscription Service

"NEW YORK - U.S. regulators are looking at the terms that Apple unveiled earlier this week for a new digital subscription system for content companies to gauge possible antitrust concerns, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The tech giant had said it will take a 30 percent commission for subscriptions garnered by thenew system in its App Store - which doesn't apply if a content partner itself brings in the subscriber - and said content companies must offer equal or better digital subscription terms to Apple customers than they do elsewhere. Apple is also prohibiting media companies' apps from linking to stores outside of its own app store."

Why Apple doesn't need an iPad 2?

"Ipad 2? Not needed?

But as competing manufacturers trip over themselves to out-spec each other, I have to wonder if they're missing the point. In fact, it feels a little like deja-vu after spending the past four years watching companies wage a failed battle of specs against the iPod.
If Apple really wanted to screw with the competition (and tech analysts), it should just slap a "No. 2" sticker on all the iPad boxes out there and see what happens. I suspect the iPad in its current configuration would still outsell all other tablets this year."

Apple Eying Historic Site for Its Largest Mac Store: Report

"A new rumor has Apple planning to build it's largest store in the world in New York's Grand Central Station, beating out London's current record holder with a store over 16,000 square feet in size.
The store should open as early as September, although it's not clear where, exactly, they'll find that much room in Grand Central. There are already currently over 100 retailers in there in what is something of a mall, but a store as big as that would be by far the largest around."

Wired blurb

"Big Apple, indeed.
Not content to have the highest-grossing store on the world’s most expensive street, Apple is set to open a gargantuan retail outlet inside Grand Central Terminal, the massive train station in the heart of Manhattan, according to a new report.
Rumors of the deal have been circulating for a few days, but Apple sleuth Leander Kahney says he’s confirmed that Apple will be opening the store sometime in the fall, most likely in early September."
